When Heaven Touches Earth

For heaven to touch earth is something we regularly ask God for when we recite the Lord’s prayer; “Your Kingdom come...on earth as it is in Heaven”. But is it something we expect will happen? Do we even know what we are looking for when we pray this?

Have you ever watched lightning in a storm? A storm generates electrical energy when moisture in the clouds rises and falls. That electrical energy is negatively charged. But when one part of the cloud becomes more heavily charged than another, it has to balance out again so lightning arcs across the gap. Over ninety percent of lightning actually occurs within the cloud. But every now and then the cloud discharges energy to towards earth and so we see bolts of lightning.

Scientists who study this kind of thing have discovered that at the same time as the charge is increasing in the cloud so the positive charge is increasing at a point on the earth. It is as if the earth is responding to what is happening in the cloud. Amazingly lightning bolts often begin from the earth. These areas of positive charge begin to ‘reach up’ and the cloud responds and ‘reaches down’ and touches the earth discharging power and light.

We can see the same happening when heaven touches earth. God is always active, there is power in heaven and we respond to that in whatever way we can. Then heaven replies, touching earth in power and glory.

When Solomon was dedicating the temple to God we read of his people reaching up towards heaven in praise and God responding by reaching down and filling the temple with his presence.

The trumpeters and musicians joined in unison to give praise and thanks to the LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang: “He is good; his love endures forever.”

Then the temple of the LORD was filled with the cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God.2 Chronicles 5:13-14

There is a growing expectancy in me that this is what our life should be like in the Kingdom. As we worship Him we should see God breaking into life’s situations through healings, prophetic, guidance, audible voice etc. They shouldn’t just be “stories” we read about in the Bible but experiences that we share with people, “Jesus is alive and this is what he did for me”. Personal testimonies are very powerful in today’s culture.  They build up the Body, raising levels of faith, and are embraced by non-Christians.

So let’s not just read about “signs & wonders” in the Bible and think that was nice for then. Let’s be aware of what is happening in heaven, let’s reach up and let’s be channels for God to show his power & love right across this Region, seeing lives changed for eternity.
